This section of the book also outlines how Ivan Milat's lawyers put forward the rather desperate defence of accusing other members of the Milat family. "The prosecution case was that one person, either alone or with another or others, was involved in the murder of all seven victims & the abduction & that Ivan Milat was that person….Whatever suspicions may have lingered about any friend or relative of Ivan Milat, the evidence against anyone else never rose above mere suspicion." I grabbed it & flicked to the index for information on a joint criminal enterprise. Howard provides a detailed account & analysis of prosecutor Mark Tedeschi's 'gripping' & cross-examination of Milat. It had me grabbing the best book on Australia's most awful crimes - R v Milat A Case Study in Cross Examination by Dan Howard. The TGC video that 'unsettled' me refers to two people in the car threatening the possibility of abduction during the period of the Milat murders. There are also many documentaries & current affairs stories with interviews with his family. The excellent mini-series Catching Milat records it accurately. The details of the investigation & subsequent trial of Milat are well known.
The murders were generally committed by picking up hitchhikers on the Hume Highway & driving them to the Bengalo State Forest, where they were tortured & brutally murdered. Milat, who died in prison in 2019, committed seven murders, the Backpacker Murders, between 1989 & 1992. The Director, Greg McLean, said he'd used the Milat case as it was more terrifying than anything he could imagine. The murderer in the horror movie Wolf Creek is loosely based on two Australian murderers - Bradley Murdoch, whom we've well & truly covered before, & Ivan Milat, the subject of this post.
